Trump Signs New Sanctions Bill Against Russia, Authorizing 100% Tariffs on India and China
US President Donald Trump has signed a new sanctions bill against Russia. It grants the president the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on India and China, the major buyers of Russian oil and gas.
Kathmandu — US President Donald Trump signed a new sanctions bill against Russia on Friday. The law grants the US president the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas. These buyers include India and China, the major customers of Russian energy.
However, the bill does not automatically impose 100% tariffs on India or China. It only authorizes the president to do so. The bill has already been passed by the US Congress.
The official name of the bill is the 'Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026'. It is named after the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
Graham, who died on July 11, was a supporter of Ukraine and advocated for tough sanctions on Russia. The 48-page bill includes exemptions for countries that import less than 15% of their natural gas needs from Russia and are working to reduce their dependence on Russia.
Additionally, the bill includes sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, senior Russian government officials, banks, and other financial institutions. Sanctions have also been imposed on Russian ships used to evade existing sanctions.
