Sugar available at Rs 110 per kg at over 1,000 retail outlets in Kathmandu Valley: Department claims
The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has claimed that sugar is being sold at Rs 110 per kg at more than 1,000 retail outlets in the Kathmandu Valley. Amid rising concerns over sugar shortages ahead of the festive season, the department said supply is smooth and urged consumers not to hoard.
Kathmandu — The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has claimed that sugar is being sold at Rs 110 per kg at more than 1,000 retail outlets in the Kathmandu Valley. In a press release issued today, the department said this was based on a meeting with stakeholders.
At a time when concerns over a sugar shortage are mounting ahead of the festive season, the department claimed that sugar is readily available. According to the release, sugar is available at outlets including Bhatbhateni, BigMart and Salesberry.
The department said supply is smooth and sufficient, and urged consumers not to hoard.
The notice was issued after various media reported a shortage of sugar—an essential food item with higher consumption during festivals—due to the flood and landslide in the Bhote Koshi River, a landslide blocking the Krishnabhir section of the Prithvi Highway, and India’s ban on sugar exports.
