New law in the works: Up to **Rs 1 million fine** and **3 months in jail** for littering
The government has tabled a bill in the **Federal Parliament** that proposes **fines from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1 million** and **jail terms of 15 days to 3 months** for littering, burning waste, or obstructing waste management. The bill also allows the government to file cases against those who strike or obstruct waste collection and disposal.
Kathmandu — The government is preparing to introduce a law that could send litterbugs to jail. It has taken this step through the ‘Bill Made to Amend and Integrate Laws Related to Waste Management, 2083’. The bill has already been tabled in the Federal Parliament.
The bill proposes fines ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1 million, depending on the nature of the offense, for littering, burning waste, mixing segregated waste, obstructing waste management, damaging public dustbins, or violating waste management conditions.
Similarly, those committing serious offenses related to waste management could face imprisonment from 15 days to 3 months, or both penalties.
On the other hand, the bill states that government cases will be filed against individuals who strike or obstruct waste collection and disposal.
The proposed bill reflects the government's policy to enforce waste management more strictly and take tough action against violators.
