NEPSE index falls 144 points in a year, market capitalization shrinks to Rs 45.47 trillion
According to Nepal Rastra Bank data, the NEPSE index stood at 2643.84 points at the end of Shrawan 2083, down 144.5 points from the previous year. Securities market capitalization contracted to Rs 45 trillion 47 billion 75 million, while its ratio to GDP fell to 68.90 percent. Although the number of listed companies reached 305, banks, financial institutions, and insurance companies still account for 50.9 percent of market capitalization.
According to the latest data published by Nepal Rastra Bank, the NEPSE index fell by 144.5 points over one year. The NEPSE index, which stood at 2788.37 points at the end of Shrawan 2082, settled at 2643.84 points at the end of Shrawan 2083.
Securities market capitalization also declined significantly. At the end of Shrawan 2083, market capitalization stood at Rs 45 trillion 47 billion 75 million, compared to Rs 46 trillion 56 billion 27 million in the same period the previous year. The ratio to gross domestic product also dropped — from 75.10 percent at the end of Shrawan 2082 to 68.90 percent at the end of Shrawan 2083.
The number of listed companies, however, increased. At the end of Shrawan 2083, the number of companies listed on the Nepal Stock Exchange Limited reached 305, up from 274 the previous year. The composition of listed companies is as follows:
- Banks, financial institutions, and insurance companies: 133
- Hydropower companies: 111
- Manufacturing and processing industries: 31
- Hotels: 9
- Investment companies: 7
- Trading institutions: 4
- Others: 10
In terms of sectoral share in market capitalization, banks, financial institutions, and insurance companies continue to dominate. Their share in total market capitalization is 50.9 percent. Similarly, hydropower companies account for 18.3 percent, manufacturing and processing industries 8.5 percent, investment companies 6.7 percent, trading institutions 4.0 percent, hotels 3.2 percent, and other groups 8.3 percent.
