Nepal's Paddy and Rice Imports Reach Rs 5.61 Billion in First Two Months of FY
Nepal imported over 106 million kilograms of paddy and rice worth Rs 5.61 billion in the first two months of the current fiscal year, with paddy accounting for the largest share by volume. The government collected more than Rs 420.4 million in customs revenue from these imports.
KATHMANDU, Oct 3 — Nepal imported over 106 million kilograms of paddy and rice worth Rs 5.61 billion in the first two months of the current Fiscal Year (FY), according to records from the Department of Customs (DoC).
The agrarian country purchased a large quantity of the staple food from abroad in the review period, with the government collecting more than Rs 420.4 million in customs revenue under this heading.
Of the total imported quantity, paddy accounted for the largest share at 54.4 percent, though it represented 38.2 percent of the total import expenses for these agricultural products. In the review period, the country imported 57.69 million kgs of paddy worth Rs 2.14 billion.
Meanwhile, imports of semi-milled or wholly milled rice were recorded at over 36.79 million kilograms, valued at Rs 2.35 billion. In contrast, the import volume of Basmati rice was relatively lower, with the country spending Rs 1.02 billion to import more than 9.34 million kgs of Basmati rice in the review period, according to the DoC.
