Nepal's Electricity Exports Cross NPR 5.09 Billion in Bhadra Driven by Bilateral Deals and Power Market
The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) earned NPR 5,092,461,282 by exporting 565,606,443 units of electricity during the month of Bhadra. Exports were conducted via bilateral agreements and competitive power markets targeting Indian states and Bangladesh. However, supplies to Bangladesh are currently suspended due to flood damage at the Chilime and Trishuli hydropower plants.
Kathmandu — The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) generated NPR 5,092,461,282 in foreign exchange earnings through electricity exports to India and Bangladesh during the month of Bhadra. According to the authority, a total of 565,606,443 units of electricity were traded in the cross-border market during this period.
Nepal conducts its energy trade primarily through two channels: bilateral power purchase agreements and the Indian competitive power exchange market. The breakdown of exports for Bhadra is as follows:
- Bilateral Agreements (Haryana, Bihar, and Bangladesh): 421,621,288 units of electricity were exported, generating NPR 3,642,528,299 in revenue.
- Power Exchange Market: 143,985,155 units were sold through the competitive market, yielding NPR 1,449,932,983.
Meanwhile, electricity exports to Bangladesh are currently halted after devastating floods in Rasuwa's Bhote Koshi River damaged the infrastructure of the Chilime and Trishuli Hydropower Stations. The NEA stated that it has already requested the necessary approval from Indian authorities to resume power transmission to Bangladesh using alternative hydropower projects.
