Nepal Telecom Regulator Warns ISPs Against Unauthorized Tariff Hikes
The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has clarified that internet service charges have not increased and warned providers of legal action for charging above approved rates or operating without authorization. The regulator emphasized that any tariff changes require prior approval and public disclosure.
KATHMANDU, Oct 10 – The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has issued a stern warning to internet service providers (ISPs), stating that internet service charges have not increased and threatening legal action against those charging more than approved rates or operating without authorization.
Responding to recent media reports about possible tariff hikes, the NTA said it had not received any proposal from ISPs to increase prices. The telecom regulator emphasized that service charges must be fair and reasonable, and providers are required to submit proposed tariffs for approval at least three months before their effective date, as stipulated in NTA directives.
The authority also reminded providers that they must publicly disclose approved rates and cannot increase charges without prior approval or collect fees exceeding the approved tariffs.
The NTA warned that violations would invite action under the Telecommunications Act and Regulations.
