Nepal Imports Over Rs 15 Billion in EVs in First Quarter of FY 2026/27
Nepal imported 6,636 electric vehicles worth Rs 15.03 billion in the first three months of fiscal year 2026/27, with imports accelerating sharply ahead of the festive season. China remained the dominant supplier, while disruptions at northern border crossings pushed traders to alternative routes.
Kathmandu — Nepal imported 6,636 electric vehicles (EVs) worth Rs 15.03 billion during the first three months of fiscal year 2026/27, with imports rising sharply ahead of the festive season.
According to the Department of Customs, 3,802 EVs entered the country between mid-September and mid-October, compared to 2,834 units imported during the first two months of the fiscal year. The government collected Rs 9.06 billion in customs revenue from EV imports during the three-month period.
China remained Nepal's largest EV supplier, accounting for 4,820 units worth Rs 11.10 billion. India supplied 1,420 units worth Rs 2.80 billion, while Thailand exported 393 units valued at Rs 1.12 billion. Two EVs worth Rs 7.8 million were imported from the USA.
Disruptions at major northern border crossings have been affecting trade with China via land route. With the Tatopani–Khasa crossing remaining non-operational and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border closed following the August 26 Bhotekoshi–Trishuli floods, traders have been using the Korala border point in Mustang to bring goods into Nepal.
