Nepal Demat Accounts Near 8.1 Million Mark: Latest Status on 'Mero Share' and Market Capitalization
According to the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON), the number of Demat accounts in Nepal has reached 8.095 million, while active 'Mero Share' users stand at 5.122 million. Data presented to the Parliamentary Finance Committee reveals that NEPSE's total market capitalization has reached NPR 4.478 trillion.
Public engagement in Nepal's capital market continues to expand steadily. According to statistics presented by Dr. Gopal Prasad Bhatta, Chairman of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON), at a meeting of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, the total number of Demat accounts reached 8,095,000 as of Ashwin 13.
Similarly, active 'Mero Share' accounts—used for online stock applications and trading—have reached 5,122,000. The board also highlighted that the number of trading accounts (broker accounts) opened by investors reached over 3,562,000 by the end of Ashadh in the previous fiscal year.
Capital Structure in the Primary Market
The primary market continues to hold a dominant share in Nepal's securities landscape. Capital raised by organized institutions through the primary market is distributed as follows:
- Ordinary Shares: 46.26%
- Corporate Debentures: 31.03%
- Mutual Funds: 14.81%
- Specialized Investment Funds: 5.17%
- Preference Shares: 2.17%
Capital Mobilization and Approvals
According to SEBON, 52 entities were granted approval to mobilize capital worth NPR 79.73 billion in the last fiscal year. In the current fiscal year (up to the end of Ashwin), 4 entities have been permitted to raise NPR 4.60 billion. Additionally, 20 specialized investment funds have so far received approval to mobilize capital amounting to NPR 48.25 billion.
Secondary Market and Revenue Contribution
In the secondary market, the NEPSE index stood at 2,603.71 points as of Ashwin 13, pushing total market capitalization to NPR 4.478 trillion.
The capital market also continues to generate substantial state revenue. The board reported that NPR 15.61 billion was collected in revenue from the securities market in FY 2082/83, while NPR 1.54 billion has been generated in the current fiscal year up to the end of Bhadra.
