Kathmandu. In the first two months of the current fiscal year 2083/84, Nepal received foreign direct investment commitments exceeding NPR 11.12 billion.
According to the Department of Industry, investment commitments totaling NPR 11 billion 12 crore 44 lakh 57 thousand came through 328 projects in Shrawan and Bhadra.
Tourism and service sectors have emerged as the main attractions for foreign investors. According to the Department's statistics, among the total investment commitments of the two months, the tourism sector received the highest investment proposal of NPR 3 billion 74 crore 28 lakh 50 thousand.
In the service sector, investment commitments of NPR 3 billion 30 crore 54 lakh 85 thousand came through 26 projects. This is about 29 percent of the total committed investment.
In Bhadra alone, foreign direct investment commitments of NPR 6 billion 35 crore 15 lakh 21 thousand came through 136 projects, according to the Department.
Among these, investment commitments of NPR 6 billion 27 crore 15 lakh came for 135 projects through the automatic system, while NPR 80 crore was committed for one project through the general process.
In Shrawan, foreign investment commitments of NPR 3 billion 77 crore 28 lakh 84 thousand came through 191 projects. Compared to Shrawan, the amount of committed investment in Bhadra appears to have increased significantly.
Looking at sector-wise distribution:
- In manufacturing industries, investment commitments of NPR 1 billion 23 crore 92 lakh came through 18 projects.
- In information technology and information-related sectors, investment proposals of NPR 81 crore 79 lakh 76 thousand came through 212 projects.
- In the energy sector, foreign investment commitment of NPR 2 billion came for just one project.
- In the agricultural sector, investment commitment of NPR 20 crore came through one project, according to the Department's statistics.
In the first two months, no foreign investment commitments came in the mineral and infrastructure sectors. During this period, the investment proposals in tourism, service, and energy sectors indicate that the sectoral priority of foreign investment is mainly focused on activities related to service and tourism.
The commitment of more than NPR 6 billion 35 crore in Bhadra alone and investment proposals exceeding NPR 11 billion in the two months of Shrawan-Bhadra appear as important indicators of the initial foreign investment flow of the current fiscal year.
