Dr. Gopal Prasad Tiwari Appointed Director General of Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry
The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) has appointed economist and private sector development expert Dr. Gopal Prasad Tiwari as its Director General. The appointment is effective from September 17, 2026 (Ashwin 1, 2083 BS). Dr. Tiwari previously served as Acting Director General of FNCCI from 2018 to 2019.
Kathmandu. The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), the umbrella organization of Nepal's private sector, has appointed economist and private sector development expert Dr. Gopal Prasad Tiwari as its Director General. FNCCI President Anjan Shrestha presented the appointment letter at the secretariat today, Wednesday, effective from September 17, 2026 (Ashwin 1, 2083 BS).
Welcoming Dr. Tiwari, President Shrestha stated that Dr. Tiwari's multilateral credibility, academic expertise, and practical experience in private sector advocacy have joined the Federation at a crucial juncture.
"Dr. Tiwari's deep understanding of Nepal's economic structure, extensive international experience, and the trust of stakeholders will elevate the Federation's institutional image to new heights. His leadership will prove crucial in making our policy advocacy more effective, implementing high-impact reform agendas, and creating a dynamic and globally competitive environment for Nepali enterprises," said President Shrestha.
With this appointment, Dr. Tiwari returns to the Federation. He previously led the secretariat as Acting Director General of FNCCI from 2018 to 2019. He brings over 25 years of distinguished experience in broad economic policy, investment reform, and public-private partnership (PPP) to his role as Director General.
Dr. Tiwari's professional journey is also linked with major multilateral institutions and international donor agencies. He has served in executive and advisory roles at the International Finance Corporation (IFC)/World Bank Group, Asian Development Bank (ADB), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), International Labour Organization (ILO), and most recently as Private Sector Coordination Director for USAID's 'Tayar Nepal' project.
His institutional engagement in Nepal's financial and business sector is notable. Dr. Tiwari has previously worked as Director General of the Confederation of Banks and Financial Institutions Nepal (CBFIN), Senior Technical Expert at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, and Strategic Advisor at the Nepal-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In addition to institutional responsibilities, he is Honorary General Secretary of the Nepal Economic Association, former President of the Society of Economic Journalists Nepal (SEJON), Senior Research Fellow at the Norway-based Phil. Dr. Jan-U. Sandal Institute, and Professor at the Department of Public Policy, Governance and Anti-Corruption Studies at Tribhuvan University (Kirtipur). In the early stages of his career, he also served as a senior economic journalist for major national dailies such as Kantipur Media Group, The Himalayan Times, and Space Time Today.
Considered a key architect of structured public-private dialogue (PPD) in Nepal, Dr. Tiwari managed the secretariat of the high-level 'Nepal Business Forum' under IFC for years. He has also played an active technical role in drafting important economic and commercial laws such as the Foreign Investment and Technology Transfer Act and the Industrial Enterprises Act.
Dr. Tiwari, who holds a PhD in Economics on improving the business environment for the private sector, has published various research books on trade diplomacy and industrial development. These include 'Self-Reliant Economy and Potential Areas for Export Promotion' (2023).
