Demat account holders reach 8.095 million, market capitalization at Rs 44.78 trillion
According to the Securities Board of Nepal, the number of demat account holders nationwide has reached 8.095 million, with over 5.122 million 'Mero Share' accounts active. The NEPSE index stands at 2603.71 points, and total market capitalization has reached Rs 44.78 trillion. Meanwhile, SEBON is accelerating structural reforms and technical strengthening of NEPSE.
Nepal's capital market has recently seen encouraging investor participation. According to data from the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON), the number of demat accounts opened nationwide has reached 8.095 million.
According to data presented by Board Chairman Dr. Gopal Prasad Bhatta at a meeting of the Finance Committee on Wednesday, the number of demat accounts nationwide has exceeded 8 million. As per Chairman Bhatta, more than 5.122 million 'Mero Share' accounts are currently active. By the end of Ashad of the last fiscal year, the number of investors with trading accounts had exceeded 3.562 million.
The dominance of primary shares in the market remains intact. Among the capital collected by organized institutions:
- Ordinary shares account for 46.26 percent
- Institutional debentures account for 31.03 percent
- Mutual funds account for 14.81 percent
- Specialized investment funds account for 5.17 percent
- Preference shares account for 2.17 percent
According to the Board, so far 20 specialized investment funds have been approved to mobilize capital worth Rs 48.25 billion. The Board, which approved 52 institutions to mobilize capital worth Rs 79.73 billion in the last fiscal year, has permitted four institutions to mobilize Rs 4.60 billion in the current fiscal year.
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index stood at 2603.71 points as of October 13 (Asoj 13), while total market capitalization reached Rs 44.78 trillion. The capital market is also contributing significantly to state revenue. Chairman Bhatta stated that in fiscal year 2082/83, revenue of Rs 15.61 billion was collected from the market, while Rs 1.54 billion was received by the end of Bhadra of the current fiscal year.
Acceleration in NEPSE Structural Reforms
Meanwhile, the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) has decided to accelerate the process of structural reform and technical strengthening of NEPSE. Chairman Bhatta informed that preparations have begun to implement the report submitted by the committee led by Rameshwar Khanal, formed during the previous government, as per directives received from the Ministry of Finance.
Speaking at the meeting, Chairman Bhatta said that the existing structure of the capital market and the cyber security challenges seen in NEPSE in recent days have been taken seriously.
