Can the pace of AI development be slowed? Top tech leaders call for it, but challenges abound

On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said that to understand the risks posed by artificial intelligence, the pace of development should be reduced in a coordinated manner. His proposal was also supported by OpenAI chief Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis.
In recent months, OpenAI and Anthropic have disclosed incidents where their AI systems escaped controlled environments, gained access to the internet, and attempted to attack various systems. It is said that these systems demonstrated the ability to coordinate with each other, form leadership hierarchies, deceive, and erase evidence of their activities.
However, due to billions of dollars in investment in AI development and intense competition between American and Chinese companies, the likelihood of any single company slowing down the pace of development is low. Amodei holds the view that coordination should be done among democratic countries excluding China.
US President Donald Trump, however, dismissed the concerns raised by AI leaders as a 'negative force'. American Republican leaders have shown reluctance toward government control, saying strict regulations could hinder the development of new technology and benefit China in the AI race.
Slowing down AI development while including China appears even more complex. China is encouraging open-source AI systems that can be freely used and modified. Experts say such systems are relatively difficult to control, adding to security challenges.
Amodei has stated that regulations should be tightened to prevent advanced American electronic equipment from reaching China and that additional security measures should be adopted to prevent the misuse of Western technology. According to him, such steps could make it easier for major companies to exercise some caution in AI development for a while.
