Authority forms five-member committee to manage winter electricity demand

Kathmandu. The Nepal Electricity Authority has intensified preparations to manage the rising electricity demand in various areas, including the Kathmandu Valley, in the upcoming winter.

A meeting held on Tuesday on the subject of managing electricity demand and supply in winter decided to accelerate the necessary studies and preparatory work. The Authority has moved ahead with preparations for winter electricity management after power generation was halted due to flood damage to hydropower projects when the Trishuli River flooded via the Bhote Koshi in Rasuwa.

The meeting, chaired by the Authority's Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, was attended by the Deputy Executive Director of the Project Management and Transmission Directorate, heads of various departments, and project chiefs.

The meeting formed a five-member committee coordinated by the Director of the Bagmati Provincial Office to carry out the necessary studies and work for winter electricity demand management. The committee has been instructed to submit daily progress reports to the Executive Director and to immediately inform about any problems encountered during the work.

Executive Director Shrestha said that although the halt in generation from power stations in the Trishuli River basin has put some pressure on electricity demand and supply management, there will be no situation requiring power cuts in the coming winter.

The meeting also decided to complete the construction of transmission and distribution projects underway in and around the Kathmandu Valley within the stipulated timeframe.

Similarly, it was decided to study various alternatives and initiate the necessary process to make electricity supply reliable in the flood-affected Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts.
