Authority corrects post-Bhote Koshi flood claim data, estimated loss only Rs 21 billion
The Nepal Insurance Authority has released updated data on flood damage claims from the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, showing a total of 2,180 claims and an estimated amount of Rs 20.98 billion. The Authority admitted an error in its earlier data, which had shown over Rs 25 billion.
Kathmandu. The Nepal Insurance Authority has recently published updated data on insurance claims for damages caused by the devastating floods in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers across five districts including Rasuwa. According to the details received by the Authority as of October 12, 2025 (Ashoj 12, 2082), a total of 2,180 insurance claims have been filed due to the floods. Accordingly, the total estimated claim amount has reached Rs 20.98 billion. Of this, only Rs 674,800 has been paid so far, including advance payments.
According to preliminary and estimated claim details received until October 12, a total of 2,180 claims have been filed with non-life insurance companies due to the severe floods in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers on August 26, 2024 (Bhadra 10, 2081).
Earlier, the Authority had published data showing preliminary damage exceeding Rs 25.87 billion, including risk exposure data. After Insurance Khabar sought clarification on the data, the Authority informed that there was an error in the data publication and that the preliminary damage figure was around Rs 17 billion.
Himalayan Everest has the highest claim amount, Shikhar has the highest number
On a company-wise basis, the highest claim amount has been filed with Himalayan Everest Insurance. The company has received 159 claims with an estimated claim of Rs 6.27 billion. Similarly, Shikhar Insurance leads in terms of the number of claims. Shikhar has received 401 claims, with a total estimated amount of Rs 2.99 billion. Shikhar Insurance has so far paid Rs 2.66 million.
Property insurance sees the highest damage
When viewed by type of policy, the largest claim amount has been filed under property insurance. Under property insurance, 518 claims have been received, with an estimated amount of Rs 9.41 billion. Under this heading, Rs 3.81 million has already been paid. Similarly, under engineering and contractor risk insurance, 165 claims have been filed, with an estimated loss amount of Rs 4.41 billion.
In terms of number, motor insurance has the highest number of claims at 1,066, with a total estimated amount of Rs 3.07 billion.
As detailed information on physical and infrastructure damage from the floods is still being collected, the number and amount of insurance claims are expected to increase further. The Authority has already instructed insurance companies to proceed with the claim payment process smoothly and swiftly for the general public and insured parties.
